Jupiter – the deity

Named after the most powerful of the Roman gods, Jupiter was adapted from the Greek god Zeus. Zeus has taken pole position from Hera, who preceded as supreme deity in earlier, more egalitarian goddess-centred cultures. However, Zeus was not always favoured throughout the populace, as Greece had an elite democracy with each town choosing its own featured deity. Rome’s solo emperor mirrored Jupiter’s takeover as number one across the vast empire. Perhaps Jupiter had a hand in uniting and strengthening the culture by reflecting an ideal, which brings us back to Jupiter’s role as a social planet, linked with growth and cross-cultural expansion.

Zeus’ mythological roots appear to be in Crete, although myths often tell stories based loosely on history, so they may well have begun as one of many Cretan clan deities. Migrating to Greece, Zeus’s forerunner was absorbed into local culture, eventually finding fame, fortune and honour. In this tale of ascent is the spirit of this deity.

In myth, Jupiter overthrew their parent, Saturn, echoing themes of expansion past established limits or boundaries. If you’re going to move past your comfort zone of your family, peer group, culture, ethnicity or gender norms, Jupiter is the deity to call on and channel.
